AI Won't Increase Productivity

However, this vision overlooks a fundamental aspect of human nature: our varying levels of ambition and drive.

These high achievers will likely leverage AI as a force multiplier, pushing the boundaries of what's possible. For them, AI will indeed deliver on its productivity promises.

Rather than using AI to enhance output, most workers will likely employ it as a sophisticated automation tool – a way to maintain their current productivity levels while reducing their actual effort. Instead of producing more, they'll simply work less while achieving the same results.
Consider a software developer who can now generate in one day what previously took a week using code agents. While this technology theoretically enables faster development cycles, the reality often plays out differently. Executives, seeing the potential of AI, might now expect one developer to handle the workload of an entire team. What was once a manageable sprint of implementing two features becomes an overwhelming demand for ten, based on the misguided assumption that AI makes such output trivial.
This dramatic increase in expectations often leads to decreased code quality and technical debt, as developers struggle to meet unrealistic demands. Even with AI assistance, human aspects of software development – system design, architecture decisions, code review, and debugging complex issues – remain bottlenecks that can't simply be scaled up. The result? Developers who might have maintained steady productivity with reasonable AI integration instead find themselves overwhelmed, cutting corners, and ultimately shipping less reliable code.
This pattern isn't necessarily the fault of either the technology or the developers – it stems from a fundamental misunderstanding of how AI augments human capabilities. Most people seek a comfortable equilibrium between effort and reward, but when faced with exponentially increasing demands, they often become less efficient as they struggle to maintain code quality while meeting impossible sprint deadlines.
